Key Considerations for Berry Growers

Water & Soil Requirements

Berries do well in sandy loam or loam soils but are able to adapt to other soil types if managed well. They require a good amount of organic matter in the soil, as well as consistent irrigation or rainfall. However, be sure not to over-saturate the soil: though they need lots of water for optimal growth, berries are sensitive to poor drainage. They’re also sensitive to heavy winds, so ensure your field has adequate protection.

Nutrient Management

Berry uniformity and taste are important for selling, especially in the U.S., where berries are graded by size and quality and must meet specific thresholds to be qualified for the market. Good nutrient management can increase your odds of a good crop. However, if you’re applying fertilizers, you’ll need to consider your application method and the source of your nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus before applying, as some berries are sensitive to chlorides.

Pest Control & Other Growing Requirements

Weeds can be a major problem for berry crops and should be treated early on. Crop rotation and integrated pest management can help stave off pests and diseases and ensure your crop has a healthy start.

Key Nutrients

N

Nitrogen

Though nitrogen is a season-long component of optimal growth in almost all berry crops, too much can negatively impact fruit quality.

P

Phosphorus

Early-season exposure plays a role in yield results and stress tolerance, so while phosphorus is critical at the pre-plant stage, it doesn’t need to be applied throughout the season, (though doing so won’t hurt plant growth).

K

Potassium

Taken up more than any other nutrient from flowering to harvest and is needed from pre-plant to harvest to ensure proper yield and fruit quality.

Ca

Calcium

Large amounts required throughout the season for fruit quality and firmness.

Micronutrients

Over-application of micronutrients can be more damaging to berry crops than a deficiency, so it is recommended to complete a soil test prior to applying.

B

Boron

These micronutrients help prevent fruit malformation.

Z

Zinc

These micronutrients help prevent fruit malformation.
