Course Description

Course Code: NUE-RS 219-5-11

CEU Credit Category:
Sustainability CEU Credit: 0.50
Nutrient Management CEU Credit: 0.50

Presenter:
Sat Darshan S. Khalsa, PhD

Assistant Project Scientist, University of California Davis, Department of Plant Sciences

Summary:
Nitrogen Cycling in Soils includes the main processes of Mineralization, Immobilization and Nitrification. The mineralization section will review heterotrophic processes of microbial breakdown of organic into inorganic nitrogen. The immobilization section will describe the conversion of inorganic to organic nitrogen based on substrate qualities. The nitrification section will discuss conversion of ammonium into nitrate through autotrophic processes.

In this course you will learn:

  • Heterotrophic processes of microbial breakdown of organic into inorganic nitrogen
  • Substrate quality defined by carbon to nitrogen ratios and the impact on immobilization
  • Autotrophic reactions and conditions of ammonium oxidation to nitrate
