Should I invest in new equipment? What hybrids will perform best on my land? How will the soil in the south field respond to heavy rains? Am I losing the nitrogen I am applying? Where should I plant cover crops? Is my conventional tillage system as productive as my neighbor’s no-till system? When will commodity prices improve, and what will it mean for our farm if they don’t?
They also ask “why?”
There is, of course, the fundamental question of why they farm. It may seem the obvious response would be, “to feed the world.” We wouldn’t dare diminish the importance of providing food to a growing population, but more often than not, the farmer’s question is both operational and agronomic, and his ultimate answer revolves around ways “to do more with less.”
At Verdesian Life Sciences, we embrace the opportunity for continuous improvement, to outdo what we’ve always done – to ask the question and examine its multifaceted answer – to go beyond the obvious and generate solutions where barriers to improvement exist.
We created this space to ask why, and help the farmer address the many and varied questions posed to him by the nature of his enterprise. Here, we will demonstrate and share the information necessary “to do more with less,” as well as improve crop performance, nutrient availability, plant health and water quality.
We ask “why?” not because we expect hardened truth in return, but because it incites exploration and discovery, provides opportunity for trial and error, and helps to define purpose and direction for the farmer and our industry.
In the end, we offer an invitation. An invitation to ask similar questions:
- Where can we improve productivity?
- How can we access more from our crop, soil, water and nutrients to impact yield?
- What should we change to gain on-farm efficiencies?
- How can we preserve our land for the future of our community?
Let’s begin to explore them. Together.
