Cary, NC (June 17, 2015)

In mid-February, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released its new 10-year agriculture projections. While the numbers are new, the theme was consistent. The report showed a continued trend of rising demand and more production on fewer acres. In order to meet supply demands, U.S. agriculture must continue investing in science, technology and industry workers.

“Growers face challenging conditions in all aspects of their business,” said Greg Thompson, chief operating officer for Verdesian Life Sciences. “Unpredictable weather conditions, regulatory pressures and volatile commodity prices, among other things, all lead to one of the most difficult professions in the world.”

According to the projections, in 2015, growers will utilize 254.7 million acres of U.S. cropland for the eight major crops: corn, sorghum, barley, oats, wheat, rice, upland cotton and soybeans. In 2024, cropland acres forecast to decrease to 246 million acres. In corn, the predicted 2015 average bushel per acre is 167.2 and is forecast to increase to 185.3 by 2024.

While growers are focused on meeting demands and predictions, companies are developing products to support growers and their needs. Verdesian Life Sciences is a plant health and nutrition company that helps farmers maximize the utility of their nitrogen and phosphorus investments.

“As the leader in plant health and nutrition, our focus is to help growers attain success through science,” Thompson said. “We strive to provide technology that will achieve higher yields and produce higher-quality crops.”

Investing in agricultural technology

Headquartered in Cary, North Carolina, Verdesian operates multiple manufacturing plants and operational offices throughout the United States and Europe. Research partnerships with a variety of universities and institutions, including the Los Alamos National Laboratory, have led to cutting-edge technologies benefitting various crop sectors.

Through Verdesian’s investment in science and people, innovative advancements in agriculture technology are happening faster than ever before. Verdesian’s product pipeline of more than 270 patent properties include soil surfactants, nutrient management and efficiency technologies, nutritionals and micronutrients, seed treatments and inoculants, and crop health chemistry and biologicals. These products enhance plant health and nutrition by protecting crops from nutrient loss, preventing and controlling disease and improving field soil conditions.

In 2015, Verdesian plans to launch at least five new products that will help growers be more environmentally and economically sustainable. As tomorrow becomes today, the agricultural industry can remain confident that companies are investing in technology and people, which help make American agriculture successful.

“With the ever-changing agricultural landscape, ensuring plant health and maximum yields are critical,” Thompson said. “Through commitment to research and enhancing Verdesian’s product line, a knowledgeable sales force and investment in science, we’re confident in providing innovative solutions to help growers optimize their operations no matter what challenges they’re facing.”
