Key Considerations for Turf Growers

NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT

Overall appearance and plant health are key when it comes to growing turf, and it’s especially important to achieve greenness without overgrowth. A good nutrient management plan can help these crops achieve optimal appearance and better tolerate stress and disease.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Turf requires well-drained, noncompacted soils for best results. Weeds, diseases and pests can be a big problem for turf, and it is recommended to use chemical control options to keep fields pest-free.

Key Nutrients

  • Iron — Essential in giving turf a greener appearance.
  • Nitrogen — Needed to help plants tolerate stress and resist disease. Nitrogen also helps improve crop density, colour and growth.
  • Phosphorus — This nutrient helps improve the rate of seedling development, as well as maturation and root growth.
  • Potassium — Key to overall growth, potassium should be applied throughout the season to improve resistance to drought, disease and cold.
  • Calcium, Magnesium & Sulfur — Apply only occasionally.

You know Phosphorus is essential to the success of your crops. You also know how hard it can be to keep Phosphorus where it’s applied. Being one of the three necessary macronutrients vital to plant health (Nitrogen and Potassium being the other two), you want to see 100% nutrient intake when you spend time and […]

Farm and family life are inextricably linked to Dan Crossley. After all, the lifelong Idaho native was raised on the family farm – where he learned the jobs and the value of hard work by his wonderful parents. It was on that farm where Dan learned to milk cows, build and repair fences, haul hay […]

It shouldn’t be surprising that someone whose career and education focused on crop physiology, plant nutrition, root biology and more would go to work every single day with a goal of developing ag breakthroughs. Amy Burton does just that.
